Getting the right color scheme

Creativity comes and goes! That’s one fact all developers and designers experience once too many.
Brainstorming an entire layout and hitting a dead-end when it comes to the color scheme is an often met issue, especially when a client wants to pick from 3 different color schemes.

Picking a few colors to satisfy the majority is not easy, not to mention when the client already has an existent brand and you have to keep that in your formula.

There are a lot theories and methods to consider before building a color scheme, but one main step is color matching! A while back, I’ve written an article about Wev developer essential tools where I’ve listed a few tools that would help web developers on a daily basis, I think it’s time to add another one on that list!

The Color Scheme Designer

I’ve had the chance to use a few color scheme builders, but ultimately, I’ve been using CSD (Color Scheme Designer). It’s flexible, easy to use, all the features you need, colorblind support and.. it’s an online tool!

My favorite feature is the wonderful well-built light and dark template example which you can test your color schemes on, and ultimately, save your palettes for future use.

For those who ask, I personally chose to write about this wonderful tool, I’m not gaining any benefits whatsoever :)

Have you used Color Scheme Designer yet? or what are your tools to build color schemes?

Catalin

My name is Cătălin Berța and I'm a front-end web developer. I was born in Focsani, Romania and currently living in Bucharest. Started playing with some good old html tables ever since 2004 as a hobby, turned out to be a full-time career! :) I've had the chances to experience and witness web development's rapid growth over the years where I've mainly focused on front-end web technologies.

    1. The good news is that you can apply the known triad, tetrad and analogic RGB color rules to get great looking schemes, though feel free to manually adjust the colors, play with CSD until you get it right :-)

  1. A great tool, good to see others using it aswell. I’ve been using it for a while and it has definatly taken the headache out of creating professional eye pleasing sites.

    1. I haven’t checked that tool in depth details, but I gave it a fast peak and I like how it has a live basic template update with the chosen color scheme, I’d give that a plus. Other than that, it has pretty much the same functionality. I guess we can leave it as a matter of preference :)
